Another Legendary Japanese Artist Teams up with Louis Vuitton

Article by: Dennis Brinkworth

I expect a lot of polka dots…lots of blue, red, green, yellow, purple, white polka dots fused into Louis Vuitton’s shoes, ready-to-wear, accessories, leather goods, and handbags.

Louis Vuitton’s creative director, Marc Jacobs, has collaborated with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama to design a collection set to hit stores in late July with specialized window installations designated for the launch.

Born in 1929, Kusama is famous for her polka dot riddled works of art on figures such as trees, whole rooms and people as well as the sexual and psychological context in her art.

Kusama has dove into other arts in the past; she is an author, publishing novels and poems, and an acclaimed director.  In 1968 she won a prize at the Fourth International Experimental Film Competition in Belgium for her film “Kusama’s Self-Obliteration.”  Now Kusama can add fashion designer to her long resume of ventures.

This is not the first time Jacobs has collaborated with a Japanese artist known for surrealist contemporary art.  In the past, and as recent as 2009, Takashi Murakami worked with Louis Vuitton to design a collection, including the popular monogrammed multicolor Louis Vuitton purses and handbags.
